The Importance of Umbrella Insurance
Out of all the questions that an individual could be bombarded in life, one of them will definitely enquire if you are insured. Sometimes, you may come across some terms that you are not familiar with, terms such as Umbrella Insurance – and no, they don’t mean to ask you if you have insured your umbrella. The term is more or less a figure of speech. This type of insurance policy is made to protect you from almost anything that your other insurance does not. Besides that, it also fills in the gaps in coverage when the limits of your regular policy are used up.
On a day to day basis, lawsuits are filed against common citizen, but have you thought about it happening to you? Will you be prepared if it does? More often than not, individuals are not prepared for such lawsuit; thus, caught without the extra coverage to protect you from the plaintiff coming after your personal assets during the lawsuit.
In order to protect yourself from situations like this, you should invest in umbrella insurance. Often, this term is also referred to as excess liability; it will kick in when your regular policy has been exhausted or when you are being sued personally over something that is not covered by your regular insurance policy The amount of coverage depends highly on the purchase and the amount also varies depending on the company – it could range from anywhere between 1 to 5 million, and it could also go as high as 10 million.
Another factor that contributes to the amount of coverage depends on how much you worth. In other words, if you have 3 million worth of personal assets, then you should be able to get a 3 million umbrella. It is rather normal or common for an individual to buy a policy that is far above their net worth, as the coverage is rather affordable to buy.
It is rather important to understand that excess liability protects you from all sorts of things that is not covered (or has nothing to do) with your other regular policies. Even personal injury protection is included in umbrella insurance. Besides that, false arrest, malicious prosecution, defamation, false imprisonment, wrongful entry, invasion of privacy and even eviction is covered.
