How to Increase Your Homeowner’s Insurance Premiums

Everyone wants to pay less for insurance. Although a practical and legal necessity, insurance payments can seem like money thrown away, when months or years go by without ever receiving any practical benefit. There’s nothing you can do to avoid having to buy insurance, but there are definitely things you can do to make sure you have to pay the maximum amount:

1) Buy a dog famous for its aggressiveness. Insurance companies actually keep lists of “no-no” dog breeds, and can raise or even refuse you insurance for owning one. This is because if that dog bites someone, they’ll be stuck with the lawsuit.

2) Fill your back yard with fun, dangerous stuff like trampolines. Put in a pool but don’t erect a safety fence around it. Once again, your insurance provider will think lawsuits.

3) Purchase vinyl siding for your house. It burns quicker than any other type of siding, and also produces toxic smoke more likely to cause death or sickness when inhaled.

4) Don’t trim the trees around your house, so that the branches are more likely to break off and damage your roof.

5) File claims every time a roofing tile is knocked loose in a thunderstorm, or there is other minor damage that might qualify. Don’t pay for anything yourself that you might get them to pay for. Of course, you will end up paying for it, over the long, long term.

6) Don’t comparison shop. Always accept that the insurance policy you have is the best you can get, for the best possible price.

Whether you need a homeowner’s insurance policy in Nevada or Alaska, none of these things will help you get the low premiums you want. Of course, if you really want a pool or vinyl siding, then you may decide that it’s worth the cost. However, just be aware that it will affect your insurance—and that you should always alert your insurer when making changes of that sort. It’s better to pay the readjusted, higher premium that to find out when you come to file a claim that you accidentally invalidated the policy.
